The Association has provided testimony and statistical information to various local, state, and federal government agencies since its inception in 1933. TMTA provides an effective and cohesive voice on behalf of the economic health of our industries by representing the interests of the membership to government.
In addition, it has organized and given leadership to campaigns to encourage positive (and discourage negative) legislation which would effect the industries. The Association encourages political participation by its member companies.
The Tooling, Manufacturing & Technologies Association Political Action Committee (TMTAPAC) offers members the opportunity to make political contributions to pro-business legislators with a broad industry-wide impact. The Association employs the lobbying services of Judy A. Augenstein & Associates to represent member interests on state legislative issues.

To help members control the rising cost of workers' compensation insurance, the Association in 1976 took advantage of legislation to allow employers in the same industry to establish a group self-insured fund. The result was millions of dollars in reduced insurance premiums for the nearly 500 members of the fund through effective cost control, improved safety and vigilance against fraudulent claims. In order to enhance the growth and strength of the fund, it was converted to a mutual insurance company in 2007.
The Manufacturing Technology Mutual Insurance Company (MTMIC) team has strong risk management, medical and claims backgrounds and stands ready to assist Association members in risk management, safety and loss control, training programs and claims administration services.
For more information on the MTMIC, contact Gary Wood at 248-488-1172 ext. 1316 or e-mail to gary.wood@mtmic.com.

The Association has, from its inception, provided invaluable industry information to the membership and beyond in the form of:
- Surveys - Since 1933, the Association has published and maintained records on the history of wages in the metalworking industry, both in the metropolitan Detroit area and throughout the nation. Only those companies who participate in each survey are eligible for those results.
° The Hourly Wage Survey shows the straight-time hourly earnings (including cost-of-living allowances) by individual job classifications and includes a rate breakdown of union and non-union shops. ° The Personnel Practices Survey contains information on the personnel practices of the industry on topics such as holiday time, vacation pay, benefits, safety and more. ° The Salary Wage Survey provides wage information on over 40 benchmark classifications in the salaried employee area. It includes a comprehensive salary administration program to assist in the orderly development of a systematic approach to salary administration.
- Seminars - The Association sponsors seminars on a variety of topics of interest to the industry including: employee relations, tax and estate planning, federal and state acts relating to how to do business, and ISO/quality compliance issues.
- TMTA Talk - The Association began publishing the Tool Service bulletin during World War II at the request of the government; and today the Association continues to provide vital information to its members through its monthly TMTA Talk newsletter.
- Member Services Directory - The Association publishes the Member Services Directory, an annual listing of all active members sorted by the type of service they provide along with their contact information. It is distributed free of charge to each member company and, by request, it is also provided free of charge to any company deemed to have need of its information. This is a tremendous tool for a company looking for a specific type of work.
